Billy Bunter's Bodyguard by Frank Richards.
Published September 1962 by Cassell & Co
Illustrated by C. H. Chapman.
What is there to say about this tired old plot? It has been done to death in the old Magnet.
Bunter abuses a man he believes to be Afro-Caribbean, using his usual ignorant and offensive vocabulary. Believing the man is chasing him he climbs a tree, where completely hidden in foliage, he sees the man undergo a remarkable transformation.
Later Smithy gets his head smacked by a stranger in the woods. An old boy turns up at Greyfriars for a visit, and Smithy ships his bedroom and hides his suitcase.
Various attempts are made to kidnap Bunter, eventually he is bundled off in a handcart after being enveloped in the customary sack and stifled with the customary gag.
All very mysterious!
By a happy coincidence, the Famous Five, whilst out of bounds, take refuge in the garden of an isolated bungalow, to avoid being copped by Quelch. He is engaged in walking poor old Prout of his legs.
So, Smithy, with his usual acumen, solves the mystery not only of Billy Bunter’s disappearance, but who robbed the Courtfield & County bank – again!
Weak plot, nice pictures!
