Characters of the MORCOVE Saga.

I have endeavoured to aid, but not replace, the information laid out and presented on the Friardale website on the girls, teachers, staff and other characters portrayed in the Schoolgirls Own Paper, the associated School Girls’ Own Library books and the SGOL Annuals of 1923 to 1939. My aim is to compile the information into an easier format, which does not replace the work of authors (compilers) to any other lists or to their books I have read and perused, nor to the FRIARDALE website.

This listing is strictly an ALPHABETICAL list of characters, rather than an account of importance of every character. For more information on the main characters, I would strongly suggest you examine the Friardale articles. I have placed a Hash, #, symbol at the foot of the individual entries to indicate referring to this website in many cases. Some characters have been very well documented by them.

As some characters do not have surnames, I have created a second list for them after the Alphabetical listing.

Place names have also been included, but I must say, it is a bigger task to include all those locations and places, than to list all the names and characters who are included in the Morcove/Schoolgirls’ Own saga/stories. They are denoted in double quote marks (“MORCOVE”).

My apologies for any exclusions and oversights I may have invariantly made, or for any confusion I may have created. I am willing to accept blame for this confusion or for their exclusion.

SGOL Annual - Schoolgirls’ Own Annual, followed by the year of the Annual, then page number she (he) is first mentioned/appears. – SGOL Annual 1923-005. (I do feel and believe it took 3-4 years from planning until publication and delivery to the shops/book retailers, hence why the annuals finished in 1943, not, say, either 1939 or 1940, with the impact of WWII.) The Schoolgirls’ Own Annual of 1928, 1931, 1934 and 1935 has been very helpful in the compilation of this list.

“ALDERWICH”. – The place where Jimmy CHERROL, His ‘uncle’ CHERROL and his cousin, Dick CHERROL, all hail from.

ALLARBY, Enid. – Student at STORMWOOD. (Is she the same Enid from COMBE HOUSE School?)

ALLARDYCE, Miss Edith. –Temporary Mistress of the Fourth Form whist Miss DANVERS is MORCOVE’s Head Mistress, later, transfers to STORMWOOD School. She is tall and fair haired, immensely popular with the fourth. - SO 290-294 & SGOL 521. - See # - Miss Danvers.

ALLINSON, Miss – Junior Mistress at ROSEMOUNT School and is promoted to Headmistress upon the retirement of Miss LOVEJOY.

ALVARO, Isabel. – Daughter of Madame ALVARO, who live on the farm ‘SIERRA JUEZ’ – SO 699-702, SO 703-709.

ALVARO, Madame. – Mother of Isabel ALVARO, who lives on the farm ‘SIERRA JUEZ’. – SO 699-702, SO 703-709.

AMBERLEY, Mr. George. – He is the Financial Director of the syndicate for the HEADLAND HOTEL with Josiah GRANDWAYS, who ends up ‘duping him’. He is an upstanding and extremely grumpy person. He is the uncle of Brenda FORDYCE.  He is residing at the CLIFFEDGE BUNGALOW during the construction of the HEADLAND HOTEL.  - SO 640-644. – See # - The Headland Hotel. – See # - Profiles – The Grandways – Mr Josiah Grandways.

AMEER OF ABDUR-KHAN, THE. – He is the ruler of this Indian state and is ‘as ugly as sin!’ This unctuous, oily character meets a grisly end in LONDON, about the only one in the MORCOVE saga to actually have such a violent ending – SO 727-730.

ANDERSON, Gracie. – Personal maid to Mrs CREEL and / or Maid of the CREEL family. She is the daughter of Mr ANDERSON and cousin of Lionel ANDERSON/THURLOE. She is accused by the THURLOE family of stealing a necklace from the CREEL’s and is dismissed, along with her father, but later re-instated.  - SGOL Annual 1934-170.

ANDERSON, Mr. – Butler of the CREEL family. He is the father of Gracie ANDERSON and is the brother of Mr THURLOE and Uncle of Lionel DERWENT/THURLOE. He was court marshalled (by the British army?) for cowardice during the Great War (World War One). He is dismissed by the CREEL’s, but later re-instated. – SO 440-444 & SGOL 681. - SGOL Annual 1934-170.

ANSTRUTHER, Miss Emily. – Aunt of Anne SHERIDAN. – S0 529-535, SO 536-539.

ASHBY, Elsie. - Fourth Form. - Friend of Laura SHERIDAN. - SGOL Annual 1932-006.

ASHBY, Phyllis. – Her name appears somewhere, although no-one recalls its whereabouts!

ASKEW, Elsie. - SO 741-745 & SGOL 563.

ASHDOWN, Amy. – SO 235-240 & SGOL 403.

ASTOVEL, Hildegard (‘Hilda’). - Body-guard to Rozella DANTON. – SO 270-274 & SGOL 487. – See # - Heroes and Heroines - Hilda Astovel.

ASHWELL, Millicent (Millie). - Fifth Form. - Best friend and study mate of Anna SILK. She is a bad loser, spiteful, rather toady and possess a bad temper. She only has a few friends in her form. – SGOL Annuals 1928-035, 1930-008, 1934-222.

ATHERTON, Connie. – A guest at the CRONLECH MANOR. – SGOL Annual 1936-011.

“BAGWORTHY FARM”. – Location used in play. It is located betwixt Morcove and the cliffs. – SGOL Annual 1936-171.

BARKER, Mr George. – Uncle of Polly LINTON. He lives at Daunton. - SO 614-618. (Is the name supposed to be NORTON? - See # - Fourth Form – Polly Linton.

BARLOW, Maggie. - Fifth Form. - Study mate with Connie CARTERET and Kitty WESTON. She has brown hair, blue eyes and a plump figure. She has a passion for eating and has a good natured soul and is a great japer. – SGOL Annuals 1928-035, 1930-011, 1934-222.

BARLOW, Miss. – A character used in a MORCOVE Christmas story. She has a jewel stolen that had been in trusted to Tess TRELAWNEY, to be sold by Mr TRELAWNEY. – SGOL Annual 1937-006.

BAROJA, Juanita. - Fifth Form. - The best tennis player in MORCOVE. – SGOL Annual 1928-035.

BARNARD, Effie. – A Servant at MORCOVE.

BARNARD, Kate. - Mentioned in #. Cannot add any further information.

“BARNCOMBE”, Devon. – The local town near MORCOVE School. It was a typical Devonshire market town, full of old-world charm. The girls would bicycle to go to the CREAMERY or other shops and businesses. In one story, MORCOVE board at a building at BARNCOMBE in SO 346-350 & SGOL 603. – SO 207-210 & SGOL 355, SO 592-597. – See % - for more information.

“BARNCOMBE CASTLE” - Residence of Lord and Countess LUNDY. MORCOVE hold an Annual Garden Party in their grounds, and is held in aid of local charities. – SO 207-210 & SGOL 355, SO 397-404 & SGOL 639. – SGOL Annuals 1935-059, 191, 1936-198.

“BARNCOMBE GRAMMAR” – This school plays (Cricket/Hockey/etc.?) with ROSEMOUNT. The school is a happy, almost fee-free, school for girls, and has a good name.

“BARNCOMBE HERALD” – The local paper of BARNCOMBE Town, see also BARNCOMBE WEEKLY EXPRESS. – SGOL Annual 1936-061, 1938-008.

“BARNCOMBE HOUSE.” – A school is not as big as MORCOVE and does not share the same reputation as MORCOVE, yet the two schools share a wonderful friendship and rivalry on the sports field. It is situated near BARNCOMBE CASTLE. Teachers include Miss BASHINGHAM, Miss BOLTON and Miss HEATHERBY. Students include Freda Jane BLAIR (Lower Fifth), Beryl BLYTHE, Cicely DRUMMOND, Sybil FORDYKE, Effie GRANT, Lillian MARLOWE and Biddy WATSON. BARNCOMBE RAILWAY STATION. – The terminus of the main-line from Exeter to BARNCOMBE. If I have this right, there is a branch line running from DISFORD to MORCOVE. - See # - Morcove Road and the Railway Line. – See % - for more information.

“BARNCOMBE WEEKLY EXPRESS” – The local newspaper for BARNCOMBE Town. See also BARNCOMBE HERALD. – SO 126-130 & SGOL 192.

BARTON, Betty. - Fourth Form. - Captain of the Fourth Form. Study mate (Study 12) with Paula CREEL, Polly LINTON and Naomer NAKARA. Best friend of Polly LINTON. She is the older daughter of James (Joe) & Nell BARTON, the sister of Doris & Joe BARTON and niece of Mr George BARTON. She is the original character the stories, the heroine of the saga, that the saga is based around. She is a sportswoman and keen worker. She is a capable girl and a born leader (and is leader of a Guides Troop). She has brown hair and grey eyes. BARTON, Doris. - Younger daughter of James (Joe) & Nell BARTON and the sister of Betty & Joe BARTON and niece of Mr George BARTON. Doris is only mentioned several times during the saga due to her ill health. She is almost run down by a car by Laura DORLAND/Jessica NEWTON. - SO 70-75 & SGOL 127, SO 626-629.

BARTON, Mr George. - Brother of James BARTON and the uncle of Betty, Doris & Joe BARTON. He saves the family from dire poverty in the early days. – See # - Betty Barton, See # - Form Four.

BARTON, Mr James (Joe). - Husband of Nell BARTON and the father of Betty, Doris & Joe BARTON. Brother of Mr George BARTON. The family lives at RIBBLETON in Lancashire. He is injured in an accident at the GRANDWAYS cotton mills. Even when their fortunes change, the family still decide to live in RIBBLETON. He, along with his daughter, Betty, is blamed and tried in court of the burning down of the GRANDWAYS cotton mill. – SO 1, SO 103-106 & SGOL 163, SO 207-210 & SGOL 355. - SGOL Annual 1934-156. – See Profiles – Grandways Family – Mr Josiah Grandways.

BARTON, Joe. – Son of James (Joe) & Nell BARTON and brother of Betty & Doris BARTON and is the nephew of Mr George BARTON. He appears at the beginning of the saga. He is seldom, if ever, mentioned later in the saga.

BARTON, Mrs Nell. - Wife of James (Joe) BARTON and mother of Betty, Doris & Joe BARTON. At the start of the saga, she is a char-woman at the GRANDWAYS mansion. Her life changes for the better as the saga progresses. She stays at the HEADLAND HOTEL whist her daughter, Betty, is recovering from a car accident. – SO 1, SO 710-714, SO 715-720.

BASHINGTON, Miss. - Mistress at BARNCOMBE HOUSE School and is an unpopular Mistress. - See SO 592-597. - SGOL Annual 1931-060. ‘The Barncombe Treasure Hunt’

BAXTER, Miss MOLLY. – Young worker at SOLEIL’S Court Dressmakers. – SO 567-569. - See # - Profiles – Paula Creel.

BAYNARD, Hazel. - Fourth Form. Study mate (Study 10?) with Pat LAWRENCE and Anne SHERIDAN or Pam WILLOUGHBY and Helen CRAIG.  She had to move out when Zillah RAINE moved in. She is the daughter of Mr Ridgeworth BAYNARD and has a look of someone who has gained at some-one else’s expense. BAYNARD, Mr Ridgeworth. – Father of Hazel BAYNARD. He is a ‘mountebank’ (An itinerant quack appealing to an audience from a platform, a charlatan.) He becomes rich due to sharemarket fraud, which Mr BARTON is a victim. - SO 626-629.

BAYNARD, Mrs. – Wife of Mr Ridgeworth BAYNARD and mother of Hazel BAYNARD. She is quietly, elegantly dresses and has a sympathetic look on her face. She is an honest person. – SO 626-629.

“BEACH HOUSE”. - A place used by MORCOVE and GRANGEMOOR. - SO 741-745 & SGOL 563.

“BEAUTY PARLOUR”. – Mentioned in a one-act play. It is in BARNCOMBE. – SGOL Annual 1937-058.

“BEECHWOOD PARK”, Lowmoor, Somerset. - A property owned by (Pat LAWRENCE’s) Aunt Jessica and is a vast country estate near the coast of Somerset. – SO 479-482. – See # - Profiles - Pat Lawrence.

BERKELEY, Clarice. - Sixth Form and Monitress. - A nice girl and can be easily swayed and can be temperamental. She tried to ‘oust’ Ethel COURTWAY to become Head Monitress, but fails. She is rich enough to ‘buy an expensive car in secret and run it’ whist at MORCOVE. – SGOL Annuals 1928-035, 1934-222, 1937-080.

‘BESTALL, A.E.’ – The illustrator of the front covers of the annuals from 1923 to 1927. He may have also done the covers for 1928-1929 that looks like BESTALL’s signature, but one (1928) only has the surname and looks smudged and the other (1929) is very small, so they could have be done by anyone. “BLACK MARIA.” – The name given to a Police prison van/wagon, also the name given by the girls for their school’s private motor-bus. – SO 643, page 619.

“BLACK RUPERT” – Highway-man/robber on road to MORCOVE, 1835. – SGOL Annual 1936-119.

BLAIN, Audrey. - Fourth Form. - Study mate (Study 15?) with Stella MUNRO and Jess LINGARD. She is a very evil child. “She is the wildest, most lawless and reckless girl that MORCOVE had ever known”. She is a breathtaking beautiful girl, with violet eyes and hair the colour of ‘ripen corn’ and is aged fifteen years, brilliant, clever and talented and is also a consummate actress. She is a ‘sometimes friend’ with Cora GRANDWAYS. She is referred to as ‘Her Majesty’ or ‘The Queen of the Form’. She is expelled from MORCOVE (see SGOL Annual 1928-101 for poem about her expulsion), and is deposited at STORMWOOD (as Anna BLAIR, and as their Fourth Form Captain!). BLAIN, Mr. – The father of Audrey BLAIN and is described as been quite handsome, although quite thin and jaded. He uses the name of Mr HALDEN as a disguise. He is continually travelling, disposing of smuggled goods and collecting their rewards and continues to live ‘on the edge’. – SO 280-284 & SGOL 507. - See # - Mr and Mrs Blain.

BLAIN, Mrs. – The mother of Audrey BLAIN and is a ‘lady of singular beauty and dignity. She certainly was not more than forty years of age, and with her fair hair, the colour of ripe corn, and extreme slimness, she might have been much younger’ and is outstandingly elegant and is as equally dressed. She is the ‘boss of the entire operations. She has a servant/maid called HANNAH. She attended the same school with (the future) Mrs GRANDWAYS, who is the reason MRS BLAIN was expelled from the school. She uses the name of Mrs HALDEN as a disguise. – SO 280-284 & SGOL 507. - See # - Mr and Mrs Blain.

BLAIN, Norma. – She is the ‘adoptive’ daughter of Mr and Mrs BLAIN, but she may be better known as Norma HALDEN. – SO 280-284 & SGOL 507.

BLAIR, Anna. – See Audrey BLAIN. - She uses this name while she is a student at STORMWOOD. – SO 140-146 & SGOL 219, SO 147-150 & SGOL 220.

BLAIR, Florence, ‘Florrie’. – See Audrey BLAIN. - She uses this name while she is a Servant at MORCOVE. – SO 280-284 & SGOL 507, SO 299-300.

BLAIR, Freda Jane. - Fourth Form. - Study Mate with Eva MERRICK. (She was a study mate with Dolly DELANE.) She can be trifle thoughtless and can be unruly. She loses both her parents one year before she comes to MORCOVE and is an heiress to a vast fortune left to her by her parents. She is keen on sports and known to be generous. She inherited her mother’s beauty, serenity and poise and is unaffected by her wealth. She attended BARNCOMBE HOUSE & LOWMOOR before coming to MORCOVE. BLAIR, Miss Ada. – Aunt of Paula CREEL. (Character used in a one-act play. She is the eldest sister of Mrs CREEL and lives in Italy.)  – SGOL Annual 1937-056.

BLAIR, Miss Jane. – The unmarried Aunt of Freda Jane BLAIR, who takes over her rearing after of her brother’s (Freda’ father’s) passing. She is a ‘Cantankerous Ogress’ and lives in a fine old Queen Anne House at LOWMOOR and is wealthy in her own right and draws a generous allowance from the estate of the (deceased) BLAIRS.

BLANTON, Miss. - Mistress of the Second Form (at MORCOVE?).

“BLEAK ST.” – Home of the CRAIG Family in the west end of LONDON. – See also Mr John CRAIG.

BLOOT, Robert. – He attends GRANGEMOOR and is better known as ‘Tubby’ and/or ‘Bobby’. He is an extremely large and absolutely loyal boy. He strikes a special bond with Naomer NAKARA. Jack LINTON calls him ‘The Blooter’ as well as other names. – SO 697, SO 699-702, SO 703-709. – SGOL Annual 1936-008, 1936-196, 1936-198, 1936-211, 1937-014, 122, 199, 1938-016, 087, 1939-007.

BLYTHE, Beryl. – She attends BARNCOMBE HOUSE School. She is friends with Freda Jane BLAIR and Cicely DRUMMOND. BOLTON, Miss. - Maths Mistress of BARNCOMBE HOUSE School. She is a friend of Miss MASSINGHAM.

“BOND STREET”. – A favourite shopping haunt in LONDON. - See also “SOLEIL’S”.

BRAGGART, Mr and Mrs. – Gate keepers (at MORCOVE?).

 “BRAMWELL SCHOOL”. - Miss Monica MERLIN was a mistress at this school, spending a short time teaching at MORCOVE, before returning to the school. – SO 52-56 & SGOL 103.

“BRANDERFORD” – The local town to CROMLECH MANOR. – SGOL Annual 1936-009.

BRANSON, Shirley. - Fourth Form. – Pam WILLOUGHBY’s Protégée? - SO 666-670. - SGOL Annual 1935-___ (Not found).

BREMLOW, Mr and Mrs. – Staff (Housekeepers?) of the WILLOUGHBY family at their HALKIN ST. residence.

BRITISH VOCAL FILMS. – The studio making the film “FATHOMS DEEP”. Mr Josiah GRANDWAYS is the chairman and Miss Lulu HELDER is the lead actress. Cora GRANDWAYS and Mabel VENNIKER set fire to the studio. – SO 509-514.

BUDGEON, Saul. – Foreman of works for the HEADLAND HOTEL construction. He lives, as a lodger, at No. 2 Tanner’s Lane, BARNCOMBE. – SO 643, page 623.

BURNABY, Mr Dick. - He is the fiancé and husband of Miss Ruth REDGRAVES and is a distant cousin of Diana FORBES. They have a nice house built at BARNCOMBE. - SO 414-419 & SGOL 653.

“BURNSIDE SCHOOL”. - Attended by Hetty CURZON before coming to MORCOVE.

CALLIGAN, Charles (Charlie). – Fourth Form Student at Grangemoor. He is also known as ‘Calli’. - SO 580-583.

CALLOWBY, Muriel. - Sister of Vanessa CALLOWBY. She is shallow, racy and pleasure seeking and had been expelled from her school. - SO 121-125 & SGOL 191.

“CALLOWBY’S SUMMER RENTAL”. – SO 121-125 & SGOL 191.

CALLOWBY, Vanessa. - Sister of Muriel CALLOWBY. She is shallow, racy and pleasure seeking and had been expelled from her school. - SO 121-125 & SGOL 191.

“CALMANI’S CIRCUS”. - A circus mentioned in the saga, but nothing further is known.

CAMPBELL, Mrs Christina. - Owner of GLENLOCHRY CASTLE. – SO 619-621. – See # - Scotland.

CARDEN, Mabel. – SO 479-482.

CARDEW, Dave. - Brother of Judith/Judy CARDEW/GRANDWAYS. He was formerly known as Dave LAWDER. Best Friend of Jack LINTON and a friend of Michael HERIOT, who attend Grangemoor. He is ‘quiet, studious and chivalrous and is as ‘solid as a rock’. He is also extremely astute, never says much, but when he does have something to say, his words are worth millions words. He had a childhood nurse called Janet. In the early years of the saga, he rode a motor bike and side car. CARDEW, Judy or Judith. - Fourth Form. - Study mate with Brenda FORDYCE and Hetty CURZON. She was formerly known as Judith GRANDWAYS. She is the sister of Dave CARDEW/LAWDER and Step-daughter of Josiah GRANDWAYS. “MORCOVE”. - Also known as ‘MORCOVE SCHOOL”, the School the stories are set in and around in North Devon and is four miles (seven kilometres) from the market town of BARNCOMBE, North Devon. Telephone One (1). Their school colours are Black, Orange and Blue. The school opened in 1895. The school stood high up on a headland overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The land is owned by the EARL OF LUNDY. The school has its own (private) bus used to ferry students. They also have an ‘Old Girls’ Day’ (held in the summer term, with a Past vs Present Cricket match taking place), as well as an Old Girls’ Association, and a Morcove Founder’s Day, held towards of the end of the Winter term, and a ‘Prize Giving Day’, held at the conclusion of the winter term. Sports Day is held in the spring term. SOMERFIELD, Miss Esther, M.A., F.R.G.S. - Headmistress of MORCOVE.  She is an ‘Old Girl’ of MORCOVE, and was one of their first pupils in 1895. She teaches senior forms in Classics and is also a Latin and Greek scholar. She is stern, can be demanding, but is fair and judicial. She is calm, kindly and gracious. She is a keen gardener and a collector of rare china. She has an adopted child or niece, also called Esther SOMERFIELD.
