Mandeville and Spring Books.
The Tom Merry and Rookwood novels were initially published by Mandeville and were almost immediately reprinted by Spring Books. The reprints used a poorer quality paper and lacked the quality and quantity of illustration that were a feature of the original publications.
Mandeville ceased trading around 1954 and Spring continued the venture.
Tom Merry
The first five Tom Merry books were published by Mandeville. Most of the Mandeville books were reprinted by Spring - some for a second time under the "Halcyon" imprint so it is possible to find the same book with 3 different dust wrappers.
When Mandeville folded and Spring took over the venture Frank Richards was acknowledged as the author rather than Martin Clifford - presumably to cash in on the popularity of the Cassell Billy Bunter books.
Rookwood
Only one Rookwood tale was published by Mandeville but it was reprinted twice by Spring.
Jack of all trades (Jack Free)
Hamilton wrote 8 books but only 3 were published in Hamilton's lifetime. The other 5 manuscripts gathered dust for almost 60 years before efforts were made to have them published. With the permission of Hamilton's great niece the Friars club set out to publish the books to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Charles Hamilton. Sadly the manuscript for the fourth book is missing, feared destroyed. You can read more about the project and purchase the books via the Friars Club website here.
Spring Book Compilations.
Around 1959/1960 Spring books released a number of hardback books containing Hamilton stories. They were reprints from Tom Merry's own, Billy Bunter's own and the Raymond Glendenning Book of Sport.
